New Refractive Technologies and Anticipated Approvals

New technologies are being research and approved on an ongoing basis. Many patients who are not candidates for refractive surgery currently may be good candidates for these newer technologies and approvals. If this is you, read on.

questions about LASIK advancements...What is wavefront LASIK and can it help me?

answers about LASIK improvements...Probably the most eagerly anticipated advancement in refractive surgery  has been the recent approval by the FDA of wavefront guided LASIK on the  Alcon LadarVision laser system.  This technology offers the promise of improving vision not only against the 20/20 standard but also improves crispness and clarity.  This may be especially beneficial for people with some irregularities to their eyes (corneas), and people who work in dim light conditions.  Wavefront guided custom treatments have completely changed how doctors and patients have come to think about LASIK; with up to a third of patients seeing better than they every did with their contacts or glasses. See CustomVision™ for more information.

questions about LASIK advancements...I am too farsighted for LASIK or have early cataracts. What other options do
        I have?

answers about LASIK improvements...Clear lensectomy may be an option for some highly hyperopic (farsighted) people. Clear lensectomy is essentially the same surgery as the very common cataract surgery that most older patients undergo.  During this surgery the natural lens of the eye is removed, and in its place a clear plastic lens is placed with a power chosen to reduce or eliminate your farsightedness.  This can reduce even very large amounts of farsightedness, but patients will need reading lenses afterwards (even if they didn't need them before), and some patients will still need glasses some of the time for distance vision.  Thus the best candidates are patients already in bifocals or reading lenses (for instance, those over 50 years old), especially if they happen to have some early cataracts starting to form.

questions about LASIK advancements...My corneas are too thin, or I am too nearsighted.  What technology improvements might help me?

answers about LASIK improvements...B&L Phakic Intra-Ocular LensA bright and promising technology now undergoing FDA investigation are phakic IOLs. These lenses go on the inside of the eye and help correct high amounts of nearsightedness or farsightedness without removing corneal tissue. The lenses resemble a large contact lens or the intra-ocular lenses used during cataract surgery.  The lenses do not correct for astigmatism, and some patients may need to have LASIK done for small residual refractive errors. Because Phakic IOLs go inside the eye, there are added risks to the surgery including cataracts, infection, glaucoma, and inflammation inside the eye.  Despite these limitations, many patients actually gain some vision over that of spectacles and this offers hope for extremely near-sighted patients.  These lenses have been approved outside the U.S. and look very promising.  FDA approval may come in late 2001 or early 2002.
